Germany captain Michael Ballack has been ruled out of the World Cup with an ankle injury suffered in Saturday's FA Cup final victory over Portsmouth.

Ballack's injury was caused by a reckless tackle from Kevin-Prince Boateng. Boateng is in Ghana's squad for the summer showpiece in South Africa, with Germany drawn in the same group.
The Chelsea midfielder underwent an MRI scan in Munich on Monday which revealed ligament damage to his right ankle, ruling him out of action for two months.
Both Ballack and Germany coach Joachim Low feared the worst after the midfielder hobbled off at Wembley. He was due to have a scan on Sunday but there was too much swelling for an accurate diagnosis.
"National team captain Michael Ballack is out of the 2010 World Cup in South Africa. This is the result of an MRI on Monday morning in Munich,'' read a statement from the German FA. "A tear of the medial collateral ligament of the right ankle was found. The right ankle is immobilised in a plaster. He will have to wear a special shoe for two weeks.
"After the diagnosis of national team doctor Hans-Wilhelm Muller-Wohlfahrt today, a complete healing of the injury is expected. Ballack's return to training is possible at the earliest in eight weeks.''
Ballack said following the FA Cup final. "It wasn't a good tackle," Ballack said. "I've seen it on TV and it didn't look a good tackle and when I was on the pitch, I knew it would be really difficult to carry on. I tried, but it wasn't possible. I've had a few injuries and if you can't carry on, that's always a bad sign. Sometimes it's bruising or sometimes it's a nerve that stops you.
"You could see when they started putting in a few hard tackles and didn't get a yellow card, they will carry on. I don't want to blame the Portsmouth players, but they were given the chance to play hard against us. But if it gets to the point where players are getting bad injuries, then it has to be stopped.
"If I was on the Portsmouth bench, I would have told them to play hard. There were a few tackles on [Nicolas] Anelka and there was no yellow card. There was another one by Michael Brown on [Frank] Lampard and from that, you can see they just want to kick players. So if you don't give them a yellow card, you can't stop them, so they carry on."
Low said on Sunday: "I have heard that nothing is broken, which is a relief, and that he will undergo a scan. I hope he gets good news from the hospital. Of course we need our captain. He has so much experience. He [Boateng] had no chance of getting the ball and a foul like that can seriously injure a player."
Former Germany boss Rudi Voller claimed Ballack was irreplaceable. Voller, who led the national team from 2000 to 2004, said in Bild: "It's brutal, terrible for Michael. He was full of optimism and wanted to play a good World Cup. There are players in the team who can't be replaced and Michael Ballack is certainly one of them .''
Meanwhile, Low has urged fans and the media to avoid a vendetta against Kevin-Prince's brother, Jerome Boateng.
Hamburg defender Jerome was named in the provisional squad last week and is almost certain to feature in the final 23-man party.
"I have spoken with Jerome Boateng,'' said Low. "I told him that we absolutely unreservedly stand by him. He is a member of the family. I ask everyone not to drag him into this."

I'm not too worried. His replacement will do fine. This is Germany we're talking about. They never allow one player's loss impact the team that much. It's like a well oiled machine.

the player that fouled Ballack is a player from Ghana. the tackle was pretty dirty and i wouldn't be surprised it if was intentional. ironic how Ghana is in Germany's group.

for all you situational cappers out there, i think Germany to win vs Ghana has GOY potential. this was going to be Ballack's last worldcup and he was looking forward to end his international career on a high note.

got to believe the German players will come out fired up to beat Ghana for payback for that dirty cheap tackle.

we will see.

germany is absolutely fine, not the best news, but a team with a lot of pedigree not to mention smart players

a few young players that can fill that role

don't like german MF at all without ballack. they can certainly finish 2nd in this group to set up a possible Germany/England match much earlier than both expected.

BERLIN (AFP) - A lawyer for Chelsea star Michael Ballack said he intends lodging a complaint against Portsmouth's Kevin-Prince Boateng for the "intentional" tackle which ended the Germany captain's World Cup hopes.
Ballack was ruled out of the 2010 World Cup finals Monday after a scan revealed torn ligaments in his ankle following a heavy tackle by Germany-born Ghanaian Boateng during Sunday's FA Cup final win.
The 33-year-old German will be sidelined for eight weeks, thus ending his hopes of playing what was likely to have been his last World Cup campaign in South Africa.
Ironically, Ghana are in Germany's Group D at the World Cup.
For the German's lawyer, Michael Becker, Boateng set out to injure Ballack intentionally.
"To me, what Boateng did was not simply an insidious tackle but was designed to intentionally injure," Becker said.
"We are now looking into all of our legal options, which could lead to both civil and penal consequences."
Ballack's injury and subsequent absence from the June 11-July 11 finals caused uproar in Germany, although Boateng said Monday he did not set out to injure Ballack.
"I was late and I tackled him head on, it was really stupid. I apologised to him twice on the pitch, and now this makes it three times," he said.
"I am really sorry, but there was no ill-intention meant."

Kevin-Prince Boateng's father has revealed that his son has had a long-standing rivalry with Michael Ballack since the Germany captain talked down to him early in his Bundesliga career, though he denied Boateng tried to injure Ballack on purpose in Saturday's FA Cup final.Boateng's tackle on Ballack caused the Chelsea midfielder ankle ligament damage, and the injury was revealed on Monday to be severe enough to rule him out of what was likely to be his final World Cup in South Africa next month.

There had been many post-match claims that Boateng, who has been selected to play for Ghana at the finals after failing to receive a call-up from his native Germany, went in to purposefully injure the captain of the side who pose the biggest threat to the Black Stars' progression from the World Cup group stage.

But Boateng's father Prince denied such a conspiracy, though he did admit that his son has had a personal problem with Ballack since being goaded by him during a Bundesliga match in 2006.

"Kevin's the whipping boy once again," Prince Boateng told the Hamburg Morning Post. "It's always twice as bad when anything happens with a Boateng. It upsets me a lot.

"But you have to look at the whole story. [In 2006] Kevin had just scored his first goal for Hertha [Berlin]. Then they played against Bayern Munich. He had an argument with Ballack.

"Ballack said to him: 'You've scored one goal, and you think you are the best'. Kevin has never forgotten that. Unfortunately, Kevin isn't very diplomatic. But I am sure, even if he did foul Ballack, he didn't mean to injure him."

The tackle - described as a "revenge attack" by the Bild newspaper - has unsurprisingly stirred up a storm in Germany, while Boateng had already come under presssure for opting to play for Ghana - his father's African homeland - instead of the country of his birth.

In a further twist, Kevin-Prince could, if selected, face his brother and Germany squad-member Jerome when the nations clash in Johannesburg on June 23.

whatever they are saying, this was an intentianal foul by boateng who is propably the most hated person in germany right now.

anyway, Ballack out is at the moment a big blow for the team. not from football tactics, but he is the leader on the pitch. a big gap to fill.
Schweinsteiger of Bayern will take over his "leader role" now, which actually could work and he will propably play together in MF with Khedira, a youngster from Stuttgart.
Being a youngster he is still not inexperienced playing a key role in stuttgart s success the last three years, being part of their championship team as well as being part of the german under 21 team that won the european championship last year.
Ballack already travelled to the team s training camp to support them. i think the group of youngsters that germany s team is formed of will now even work harder for each other and might be able to overcome the big loss..still in the really big matches they might miss Ballack..but then again the really big matches come later in tourney and by then the team will have some wins under the belt and already grown confidence. the usual german tournament strength!!
i am not to worried about an england matchup here (they have their own injury problems), more about the games later (but that s me being german @))

... set up a possible Germany/England match much earlier than both expected.

I'm not worried about playing against England. We will beat them on penalties. :)

Actually I don't take it for granted that Germany will make it out of the group stage. Serbia and Ghana are formidable opponents in Germany's current form. There's basically no part of our team without significant issues.
I guess we will really have to hope that Germany once again proves to be a "tournament team".
